Sinus Lift East Brunswick & Marlboro, NJ
Dental implants need bone to hold them in place. When your upper jaw lacks sufficient bone to accommodate implants naturally, sinus lift surgery can help. A sinus lift is a common and straightforward procedure that helps build up the bone in that area, so your implant has a strong, lasting foundation.
How Does a Sinus Lift Help?
The key to a successful, long-lasting implant is the quality and quantity of jawbone in which it is placed. During sinus lift surgery, we add bone to the floor of the sinus cavity, allowing more bone formation. The sinus lift is a common bone grafting procedure that encourages bone growth where the teeth in the upper jaw are secured. This new bone means your dental implants will be properly anchored.
Am I a Candidate for a Sinus Lift?
If you are in good health and are missing one or more teeth toward the back of your mouth, you may be a candidate for a sinus lift, particularly if you do not have enough bone to support dental implants naturally. At your consultation for dental implants, Dr. Ladman, along with our implant coordinator, will discuss your options and whether you may need a sinus lift before or at the time of getting dental implants.
The Sinus Lift Procedure
The whole procedure usually takes less than 90 minutes. You will be very comfortable and numb for the procedure. We will discuss the option of IV sedation if you are a good candidate and choose to be sedated for the procedure.
Once the area is numb, we make a small opening in the gum where the implant is planned. We carefully elevate the sinus lining to make space and add bone to the area, reinforcing it and creating a strong foundation to hold and support the implants.
After placing the material, we close the area with stitches, and you’ll go home the same day. We’ll give you simple instructions to help with healing and schedule a follow-up visit to check your progress.
Healing and Next Steps
Your body needs a few months (typically 3 to 6) to build new bone in that area. You should not experience any discomfort during this time. Once there is sufficient new bone, we can place your dental implant securely, giving you a stable and long-lasting result.
This procedure is one that many people have before getting implants. It’s safe, routine, and helps make sure your implant is successful for years to come.
How to Prepare for a Sinus Lift
We will provide detailed guidelines to prepare for your sinus lift surgery. Please inform us about any medications you are currently taking, as these may impact the outcome of your surgery. If you are receiving anesthesia, be sure to stop eating or drinking after midnight before your sinus lift. Finally, if you are a smoker, give up smoking for several days or longer before any sinus lift procedure, as smoking (including vaping) can slow the healing process.
If you are considering upper jaw dental implants, sinus lift surgery may be needed for the best results. Please get in touch with our office to schedule a consultation and learn more.
